Americans are straightforward. They say what they mean, so “yes” means “yes,” “no” means “no,” and “maybe” isn’t a polite way of saying “no” – it truly means “maybe.”
アメリカ人は素直です。”yes “は “yes”、”no “は “no”、”maybe “は “no “の丁寧な言い方ではなく、本当に “maybe “という意味なのです。
Even though it is considered impolite to interrupt someone who is speaking, it occurs frequently in the United States. If you pause to collect your thoughts or think things through, someone else may jump in and start talking, finish your sentence, or take things in a different direction. If you want to make a point, say, “Excuse me,” when there is a pause, and then continue.
話している人を中断することはよろしくないですが、アメリカではそれが頻繁に起きています。自分の考えをまとめたり、よく考えたりする時に、間を空くと、他の人が飛び込んできて話し始めたり会話の方向を変えて行きます。言いたいことがあれば、間が空いたときに “Excuse me “と言ってから続けるようにすると丁寧な印象を与えます。
Americans dislike silence and will go to great lengths to fill it. In meetings, they also expect people to participate and speak up. If something is unclear to them, Americans are not afraid to ask questions. If you do not ask any questions, it is assumed that you understand everything, and if you are quiet, it may be assumed that you have nothing to contribute or that you did not come prepared to the meeting.
アメリカ人は沈黙を嫌い、それを埋めるためにあらゆる努力を惜しみません。また、会議では、みんなが参加して発言することを期待します。何か不明な点があれば、アメリカ人は恐れずに質問をします。何も質問しなければ、すべてを理解しているとみなされますし、黙っていれば、何もいうことがなく、会議に参加する準備をしてこなかったとみなされるかもしれません。
Many meetings in America begin with a brief amount of small talk to calm things down, and make people feel at ease. Small talks will usually not last long, and it is a way to get meetings started.
アメリカの多くの会議では、場を落ち着かせ、人々を和ませるために、簡単なスモールトークから始まります。世間話はたいてい長くは続かず、会議を始めるための手段である。
